Young Carers
Support for Young Carers at Our School
At St John's, we recognise that some of our pupils take on caring responsibilities at home. These children are known as young carers. A young carer is someone under 18 who helps to look after a family member who may be ill, disabled, have a mental health condition, or struggle with addiction.
We understand that being a young carer can be rewarding, but it can also be challenging and sometimes overwhelming. That’s why we are committed to supporting our young carers in every way we can.
How We Support Young Carers
- Young Carers Club: We run a friendly and supportive Young Carers Club once every half term for children in Years 1 to 6. This is a safe space where young carers can take a break, meet others in similar situations, and enjoy fun activities together.
- Trusted Adults: All young carers have access to a trusted adult in school who they can talk to if they ever need help or just someone to listen.
- Awareness and Understanding: We promote awareness across the school so that staff and pupils understand the role of young carers and how we can all support each other.

If you think your child might be a young carer, or you’d like to learn more about how we can help, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office or speak to our Young Carers Lead, Helen Young.
There is a local service that we signpost families to if we feel they would benefit from their support: Surrey Young Carers which can be found here (https://www.actionforcarers.org.uk/who-we-help/young-carers-under-18)
We are here to listen, support, and make sure all our pupils can thrive.
